An angry mob has set a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus ablaze after it reportedly crushed a motorcyclist to death at Ogolonto Bus Stop along Ikorodu Road in Lagos State.

The mob also reportedly attacked the bus driver before police officers and officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) intervened and rescued him unharmed.

A viral video seen by SaharaReporters showed the BRT bus engulfed in flames as fire consumed the vehicle.

Another social media user, Hismercy01, also reported the incident, alleging that youths in the Ogolonto area set the bus ablaze.

The user claimed that the timely intervention of a task force prevented further damage to other BRT buses in the area.

A BRT set ablaze by Ogolonto boys along Ikorodu road. The okada rider is rumoured to be a prominent member of the Eiye confraternity in the area, reportedly their number 1.Further damage to BRT buses could have occurred if not for the timely presence and intervention of the Task Force.

However, the identity of the deceased motorcyclist and the events leading to the burning of the bus had not been independently established as of the time of filing this report.

The incident has renewed concerns about road safety and mob violence following fatal road accidents in Lagos, where public transport vehicles have sometimes been targeted during outbreaks of unrest.

Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, for comments were unsuccessful, as she neither answered calls to her mobile phone nor responded to a message sent to her.

It also recalls the destruction of BRT buses and other public assets during the October 2020 #EndSARS protests in Lagos.

The protests began as a nationwide movement against police brutality and abuses by the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) but later escalated into violence in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria.

During the unrest, public infrastructure, government facilities, private businesses and transport assets were attacked, with several BRT buses set ablaze.

The destruction caused significant damage to public infrastructure and disrupted transportation services across parts of Lagos.

The latest incident adds to concerns about the safety of public transport operators and the destruction of public property following fatal road accidents.
